Position Description

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer Automation, you will be responsible for working within the framework of a team and performing the following activities:

  • Design and troubleshoot complex automated systems consisting of a wide variety of electro-mechanical components including sensors, safety components, pneumatics, drive systems, etc.
  • Perform a variety of engineering tasks including the planning, designing, building, and troubleshooting of fixtures and automated equipment
  • Evaluate machine feasibility using return on investment calculations, machine costs, prototype testing results, and other appropriate engineering tools such as 3D CAD, risk analyses, and FMEA
  • Generate and review 3D CAD drawings and models using SolidWorks
  • Perform design of experiments to determine optimal equipment parameters
  • Write maintenance manuals, manufacturing and calibration instructions, and qualification protocols and reports for new and existing equipment

Position Requirements

This position requires the following skills and attributes: 

  • 4 year degree in Mechanical Engineering or in a related field
  • 5+ years of experience designing and testing electro-mechanical and pneumatic systems
  • Experience designing and upgrading industrial or manufacturing automated systems, working in a team environment and working on multiple projects at once
  • Knowledge of machining and assembly tools, equipment and techniques
  • Experience with a solid-modeling CAD software package such as CATIA, Pro/ENGINEER or SolidWorks
  • Strong communication skills
  • Knowledge of mechanical, pneumatic and electronic devices commonly used in automated equipment


The following skills and attributes are preferred: 

  • Experience using machining and assembly tools and techniques
  • Familiarity with SolidWorks, PDM and SAP/PLM
  • Experience guiding entry-level engineers
  • Ability to work directly with vendors to specify, source and integrate machine components
  • Experience with getting projects definition from customers and meeting their needs
  • Working knowledge of industrial pneumatics and sensors
  • Strong analytical ability and capable of understanding complex systems with multiple variables
  • Understanding of GD&T, tolerance stack up and manufacturing processes for precision machined parts
