    Position Description

    As a Surgical Simulation Designer, you will work towards advancing the field of surgical training for residents and surgeons on laparoscopic skills and procedures. You will be responsible for working within the framework of a team and performing some or all of the following activities:

    • Design and prototype creative solutions for simulated organ models
    • Manage product development projects of simulated organ models, laparoscopic training devices, or training accessories from initial idea, through design and development, and into production
    • Work with customers both internal and external to determine detailed product requirements
    • Brainstorm, research, and develop concepts to meet product requirements
    • Prototype concepts and run engineering evaluations to determine their feasibility
    • Finalize designs and create detailed drawings using SolidWorks
    • Create instructions for manufacturing
    • Develop a variety of production processes for new product development
    • Design fixturing, molds, and simple machines as needed for production
    • Research new flexible materials, adhesion methods, processing of silicones and rubbers, cutting methods, etc.
    • Organize and plan project management activities and give detailed updates to team
    • Write, submit, and follow up on project documentation: protocols, reports, drawings, and instructions

    Position Requirements

    This position requires the following skills and attributes:

    • Curious, self-starter, quick learner
    • 2-4 years of experience in design using flexible materials, plastics, and/or gels
    • Excellent hands on prototyping and familiarity with a variety of fabrication techniques
    • Working knowledge of manufacturing processes and equipment
    • Proven ability to creatively solve complex problems and generate multiple solutions
    • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
    • Self-motivation and ability to multi-task
    • Strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills
    • Interest in anatomy and physiology


    The following skills and attributes are preferred:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Science
    • Working knowledge of CAD modeling and drafting (SolidWorks)
    • Use of project management software like MS Project
    • Experience in technical writing
    • SAP and PLM Experience
    • Experience with electronics in design or manufacturing
    • Experience writing test protocols and reports
    • Experience conducting process validation
    • Ability to translate customer needs into design requirements
    • Knowledge of the design process
